How Cavities In Between Teeth Are Treated

Posted on 1/20/2019 by Sundberg Office
How Cavities In Between Teeth Are TreatedCavities that develop between the teeth are caused by breakdown or weakening of the outer enamel layer of the tooth as a result of a build-up of bacteria and plaque on the surface. These forms of cavities are commonly referred to as interproximal cavities and are curable.

Diagnosis is done by using an X-ray referred to as bite wing. The x-ray helps us to get a clear perspective of the degree of the dental cavity before proposing any treatment.

Re-calcification involves restoration of calcium compound on the decalcified section. A fluoride gel will be used if the cavity is shallow, that is, only extends halfway into the outer layer of the enamel.

Dental fillings are applied if the cavity is deeper, that is, they extend beyond the halfway point of the enamel. The dentist can also decide to use composites if the cavities are small or medium sized. However, large fissures and pits require the use of dental crowns.

Evaluation is done to determine the number of cavities as well as the depth. With this information at hand, the dentist is able to make a decision on the most plausible treatment to use.

It is also important to note that cavities can also occur on the flat exterior surface of the teeth. They usually appear due to lack of regular and proper brushing of teeth. Since most of them are very shallow, no filling is done. Instead, fluoride treatments, sealant gels, special toothpastes, and fluoride-enriched water are enough to resolve the problem.

Going for a regular dental check-up is one of the guaranteed ways of protecting yourself from these cavities. We have invested in modern equipment that are effective in identifying in between cavities quickly. Call us today to book an appointment. We look forward to seeing you.
